This week I talked to the many-talented Kara Nesvig. I met Kara when she was the fashionista behind  the U of M’s notorious fashion column, “The Fashionista is In,” and she’s since gone on to be a beauty blogger for xoVain, the voice of @aveda, a Thought Catalog writer and a general Instagram bombshell.

Here’s a little more about Kara.

Which writers made you want to be a writer growing up?

I read everything growing up because I was so bored in my small town. I think LM Montgomery, who wrote Anne of Green Gables, was probably the most influential to young me.

What’s your advice for people who want to write creative non-fiction and personal essays?

Keep a notebook, or write things down as they strike you in the Notes section of your phone. Write all the time – snippets are a good way to start, because you never know where they’ll take you. Also – READ. Read memoirs, essays, Internet writing … read it all!

What are your favorite beauty blogs? What makes someone a good beauty blogger?

Obviously I love xoVain and Beauty Bets. I have a love-hate relationship with Into the Gloss. Good beauty bloggers are honest, thoughtful and aren’t afraid to try new things and let any imperfections show.
